Wilmington, NC The Charlotte Observer has come out against it. The Raleigh News and Observer has come out against it. Now it's your turn to tell you legislators face to face that Titan Cement is a bad idea for your community and your family--and it's time to send them packing! Join the Stop Titan Action Network (STAN) in Raleigh on Tuesday March 24th for Clean Water Lobby Day. The NC Watershed Alliance is hosting this annual opportunity to talk to your state legislators about key water quality & conservation legislation. This year, Titan is front and center.
We're asking everyone to: - insist that a moratorium on cement plants be enacted until the health and environmental impacts of this industry are known.
- urge legislators to adopt a strong water withdrawal permitting program to protect the health of our rivers and keep us growing sustainably,
- work for stronger rules to protect our water bodies from sedimentation pollution,
- ask that funds be appropriated to help create green jobs through the Community Conservation Assistance Program
We will be taking a bus from Wilmington to meet with key legislators and we need your help to fill the bus! We will leave on March 24th from Wilmington at 8 am and return by 6 pm. While on the bus, we'll brief you about the issues and provide talking points for meetings with legislators (which we will set up). Even if you do not talk during the legislative visits it is important to join us and show your support for clean water and a healthy environment. Remember, Titan has several paid lobbyists in Raleigh that are trying to buttonhole your legislators every day! Your presence will speak louder than their words! We'll also rally at the legislature in anticipation of the introduction of a bill to enact a moratorium on cement plants in NC. If that happens we need to throng the observation gallery and let North Carolina's finest know that our children's health and our environment aren't worth Titan's promised jobs and that our state deserves better! Please join us and show your support!. Tickets are $25 which will help defray the cost of the bus. Our goal is to fill at least one bus and if needed fill a second bus. If the seat cost is prohibitive let us know and we will try and help with the cost for your participation. Time is critical so please reserve your spot ASAP with Mike Giles, NCCF Cape Fear Coastkeeper at (910)-790-3275 or

Coastal Federation, Cape Fear River Watch, Cape Fear Group of the North Carolina Sierra Club, PenderWatch & Conservancy, Cape Fear Climate Action Network and the Friends of the Lower Cape Fear River/stoptitan.org. What’s at Risk: The Northeast Cape Fear River: The cement plant would include a limestone mine 70 feet deep, sprawled over more than 1,500 acres. The mine would destroy natural habitat and their ecosystem functions forever. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has designated the river as an Aquatic Resource of Natural Importance. More than $113 million in state, federal and private money has been spent to acquire or permanently protect land within 25 miles of the site. Titan’s proposal is inconsistent with these kinds of investments along the river. Drinking Water Resources: The plant would withdraw millions of gallons of water from the Castle Hayne and Pee Dee aquifers, potentially lowering local water tables and worsening the intrusion of salt water that already plagues parts of New Hanover County and the tourism-based beach towns. The Air We Breathe: Titan’s plant would be the largest source of air pollution in our area. The plant would annually emit tons of particulate matter, mercury, lead and other pollutants into our atmosphere. Local doctors have voiced strong concerns about the serious health risks associated with this proposed plant. Our Fisheries: The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission has requested that all permitting of this facility be delayed until the required comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement is released and evaluated by all agencies and stakeholders. Mercury is readily converted to the more toxic form of methylmercury, which can accumulate in many of our fish species, making them dangerous to eat. The plant’s mine would destroy more than 1,000 acres of wetlands which are invaluable as fish nurseries and as storehouses of food for many species. Our Economy: Communities containing heavily polluting industries such as Titan are associated with declines in investments in real estate, corporate business centers, high-tech green industries and a multitude of tourism-based businesses and supporting service industries. Our Climate: The cement plant will increase North Carolina’s carbon dioxide emissions, a major cause of global warming. North Carolina currently emits nearly the same amount of C02 as California with one-fourth the population. Cement plants emit 5% of human-caused CO2 emissions worldwide.
